Hydrovac Excavation in Galt
Hydrovac through Galt, from the downtown core on both banks of the Grand River to the residential streets of West Galt and East Galt.
Galt is the oldest ground in Cambridge and the most complicated to dig. The downtown on both banks of the Grand has been industrial since the mills, and under its streets and back yards are stone foundations, mill races, abandoned water and gas services and private laterals that no locate marks. The soil is river-deposited and changes within a lot, from gravel that cuts fast to silt and clay that hold water and make heavy slurry, and the water table is close to the surface near the river. Hydrovac is the right tool here because it exposes whatever is there without breaking it and because the vacuum handles water in the hole. The common jobs are deck and addition footings tight to older houses in West Galt and East Galt, exposing the gas service at the wall, fence replacement through mature roots, daylighting for a storefront service upgrade downtown, and helical pile pre-excavation on infill sites. The administrative point comes first: a large share of Galt lots sit inside a Grand River Conservation Authority regulated area under O. Reg. 41/24, where removing material from a site can need a permit, so the GRCA's Map Your Property tool is checked for the address before anything is scheduled. Downtown right-of-way work needs the City's Highway Occupancy Permit and traffic control.

Frequently asked questions
Do you charge extra for Ayr or the townships?
No separate travel line. Work outside the city is quoted on the same hourly basis, and travel is part of the day. Rural jobs are often cheaper per hole because the truck parks beside the line and the hose run is short.
Which permit applies outside Cambridge?
The City of Cambridge Highway Occupancy Permit covers City roads and boulevards inside Cambridge. In North Dumfries Township, including Ayr, the township issues its own road permits, and Regional roads anywhere in the region go through the Region of Waterloo. The Ontario One Call locate requirement is the same across Ontario.
How do I know if my property is in a GRCA regulated area?
Enter the address in the Grand River Conservation Authority's Map Your Property tool and look for the Regulation Limit layer. Much of Galt, Preston and Blair along the Grand and Speed rivers is inside it. If the property is regulated, removing material from the site can need a GRCA permit, and that is sorted out before the dig is scheduled.
