Hydrovac Excavation in Hespeler

Hydrovac across Hespeler, from the industrial park off Guelph Avenue and Queen Street to the old village along the Speed River.

Hespeler is two kinds of ground. The industrial park north of the village is older plant stock, with yards that have been paved, repaved and added to by a succession of tenants, and services under them that bear only a family resemblance to the master drawing. Daylighting fire mains and process lines before an addition or a pad pour, slot trenching for new conduit and compressed air between buildings, caissons for canopies and racking, and emptying the yard's catch basins and oil-grit separators are the regular jobs, most of them in production windows with the plant running. The old village along the Speed is the other Hespeler: mill-era streets with stone foundations, abandoned services and private laterals nobody drew, on river-deposited ground that varies from gravel to silt within a lot. Deck footings, fence replacement and service exposure before an addition are the common jobs there. Many village lots along the river fall inside a Grand River Conservation Authority regulated area where removing material from a site can need a permit, so the GRCA's mapping is checked before the truck is booked. Right-of-way work needs the City's Highway Occupancy Permit.

Frequently asked questions

Do you charge extra for Ayr or the townships?

No separate travel line. Work outside the city is quoted on the same hourly basis, and travel is part of the day. Rural jobs are often cheaper per hole because the truck parks beside the line and the hose run is short.

Which permit applies outside Cambridge?

The City of Cambridge Highway Occupancy Permit covers City roads and boulevards inside Cambridge. In North Dumfries Township, including Ayr, the township issues its own road permits, and Regional roads anywhere in the region go through the Region of Waterloo. The Ontario One Call locate requirement is the same across Ontario.

How do I know if my property is in a GRCA regulated area?

Enter the address in the Grand River Conservation Authority's Map Your Property tool and look for the Regulation Limit layer. Much of Galt, Preston and Blair along the Grand and Speed rivers is inside it. If the property is regulated, removing material from the site can need a GRCA permit, and that is sorted out before the dig is scheduled.
