Catch Basin and Culvert Cleaning in Cambridge

An industrial yard's catch basins are the last thing between the pavement and the Grand River. When the sumps are full, they are not doing that job.

Every industrial yard, truck lot and plaza in Cambridge drains to catch basins with a sump below the outlet, designed to trap sediment before it reaches the storm sewer and, in this city, the Grand or the Speed not far downstream. Winter sand, silt, gravel and whatever the yard sheds fill the sumps over a season, and a full sump passes everything through or, if the outlet chokes, floods the yard. A hydrovac truck empties them properly: the vacuum lifts the wet sediment through the grate, water loosens anything compacted, and the material goes to the debris tank rather than being jetted down the pipe to settle somewhere else.

What gets cleaned

  • Yard catch basins and double basins on industrial and logistics sites in Hespeler, Pinebush and along the 401, usually on a spring and fall schedule with the plant's facilities group.
  • Oil-grit separators, which most larger yards have as a condition of their site plan, where sediment and floatables are removed and the unit inspected at the manufacturer's interval.
  • Trench drains at loading docks, wash bays and shop entrances.
  • Driveway and laneway culverts on the rural properties toward Ayr and Blair, where a silted culvert floods the driveway every spring.
  • Plaza and condominium basins, area drains and sump pits across the city.

Why it cannot be flushed down the pipe

The Region of Waterloo's Sewer Use By-law 21-036 limits storm sewers to uncontaminated water and storm water and sets a suspended solids limit on the sanitary sewer. Catch basin sediment from an industrial yard, carrying salt, hydrocarbons, metals and silt, is neither, so it leaves the site in the truck and goes to a facility approved to receive it, which may be a facility that accepts potentially contaminated material. That disposal is part of the quoted price per basin. The difference between vacuum cleaning and cheap jetting is where the sediment ends up: jetting sends it downstream toward the river; vacuum removes it from the system.

Scheduling and access

Cleaning is quoted per basin for a site, with a spring visit after the winter sand and often a fall visit after leaf drop. The truck must park within hose reach of each basin, which on a working yard means a coned window agreed with the facilities manager, often at a shift change or on a weekend. Basins in the City right-of-way are the City of Cambridge's to maintain; this service covers private property and private roads.

Frequently asked questions

How often should an industrial yard's catch basins be cleaned?

Once a year in spring after the winter sand is the minimum for most Cambridge yards, with a fall visit on sites that shed a lot of material or have heavy leaf drop. Oil-grit separators follow the manufacturer's interval, and some site plan agreements set their own. A basin that floods in ordinary rain is overdue.

Can you clear a blocked outlet?

The sump is vacuumed first, which often frees a blockage sitting at the outlet. A blockage further along the pipe is a flushing or camera job, which we can arrange or the site's drainage contractor can take on.

Do you clean the basins on my street?

No. Street basins are maintained by the City of Cambridge and a flooded one should be reported to the City. This service is for basins on private property: yards, lots, plazas, condominium roads and private driveways.
