Hydrovac Excavation in Blair & Ayr

Hydrovac in Blair, Ayr and the North Dumfries Township countryside south and west of Cambridge.

Blair and Ayr are a different scale of hydrovac work from the industrial parks and the river towns. Fence and pole runs are long and the truck can park beside the line, which makes the cost per hole better than any city back yard. Driveway and laneway culverts silt up and flood every spring and are cleaned by vacuum rather than dug out. The real value is in what no locate covers: septic beds and tanks, wells and water lines to barns, gas lines run out to shops, old services to buildings taken down years ago, and drainage tile across the fields. Finding those by hydrovac before a footing, a pole or a new line goes in is the job that avoids an expensive afternoon. Blair sits beside the Grand River and parts of it, like the Nith River corridor through Ayr, are inside a Grand River Conservation Authority regulated area, where removing material from a site can need a permit; the GRCA's mapping is checked before the truck is booked. Ayr and the countryside are in North Dumfries Township, so a road permit comes from the township rather than the City of Cambridge, while the Ontario One Call requirement is the same everywhere in Ontario.

Frequently asked questions

Do you charge extra for Ayr or the townships?

No separate travel line. Work outside the city is quoted on the same hourly basis, and travel is part of the day. Rural jobs are often cheaper per hole because the truck parks beside the line and the hose run is short.

Which permit applies outside Cambridge?

The City of Cambridge Highway Occupancy Permit covers City roads and boulevards inside Cambridge. In North Dumfries Township, including Ayr, the township issues its own road permits, and Regional roads anywhere in the region go through the Region of Waterloo. The Ontario One Call locate requirement is the same across Ontario.

How do I know if my property is in a GRCA regulated area?

Enter the address in the Grand River Conservation Authority's Map Your Property tool and look for the Regulation Limit layer. Much of Galt, Preston and Blair along the Grand and Speed rivers is inside it. If the property is regulated, removing material from the site can need a GRCA permit, and that is sorted out before the dig is scheduled.
